Homework

Dear Grade Threes:

Thank you for another busy day. I appreciate your willingness to work at being more organized and aware of how time is spent in the classroom.

We will continue to use the timer in class at the morning bell to get us into the classroom faster. Remember, you have 5 minutes to get yourself organized and ready for the morning announcements - this includes: coats off, indoor shoes on, placing your homework folder into the bin, having your Literacy MAP book and your morning snack at your desk, being seated and ready for O Canada and announcements. Thank you for those who managed to be seated and ready for learn in less than 5 minutes!

Literacy MAP - Students in Mrs. Brinson's group must complete homework on a daily basis. Today, there were many of you who did not complete the work. Please show respect and responsibility for yourselves as learners.

Home Reading - As always, please set aside some uninterrupted time to read with your parents each night.

Science - Today we watched a brief but very informative video about rocks and how they are formed. Here is the link for you to watch at home. You can click on the link below to redirect you to the page.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/science/environment_earth_universe/rock_cycle/activity.shtml

Math - We worked at finding patterns in a Hundreds Chart today. It was neat to see how many we could find. We will work again tomorrow to find more!

Art - I would like to set aside Friday afternoons as our time to focus on talking about, looking at and creating art together. Please remember, we need to focus well and work hard during the week to have this uninterrupted time.

*Items for Art - Please bring in a pair of unused and unwanted eyeglass frames. They can be old sunglasses. We will be looking to build patterns on them using various items. We will also need small decorative pieces such as: beads, beans, sequins, buttons or whatever you may have around the house. Please send them in a Ziploc bag with your child. It would be great if you could have all items here by Wednesday, October 6, 2010.

Family Photo Night - The photographer would like to return to our school in Spring 2011 for Family Photo Night. The dates have not been decided upon yet.

Thanks for reading the agenda. I'll see you tomorrow.

Picture Day Tomorrow

Grade Three's & Parents:

Today was a great day as we worked hard to listen to instructions and expectations. Thank you for being considerate and respectful of each other's learning.

Writing - We worked on brainstorming adjectives today using first letters from A-Z. Most students were successful at using this strategy to build great lists in their writing journals to prepare for sentence writing tomorrow.  However, a few had a difficult time. Ask your child if she/he can name adjectives to describe an object at home.

Reading & Books - Students went to the library to sign out books today. Please remember to read each night.

Picture Day - Please remember that tomorrow is picture day. A few key items to keep in mind when you get ready tomorrow morning: wear bright colours, be well-groomed & bring your smile!

Fun Lunch - This will be during the lunch hour tomorrow. If you did not return a form or pay for Extreme Pita, you are expected to bring a lunch.

Have a great night.

Warm Weather Wednesday!

Dear Grade Three & Parents,

Finally the sun has returned! Hurray! However, please continue to warm layers to school as our weather is unpredictable.

LA - We are continuing to look at the main character "Gilgamesh" from our reading of Gilgamesh the King. We are learning how to write strong sentences to express our emotions - using the "show don't tell" strategy. For example, we can turn a basic sentence from "Jill was mad" to "Jill's brow furled as she stared into the eyes of Billy" to better express feelings on paper. Ask mom or dad for ideas as to how they would express being "excited."

Science - Today, we continued our study with rocks. We worked to build a better understanding of attributes. A simple definition of an attribute is "a way to describe or group objects together." We learned today about words connected to the physical properties of rocks. We will continue our work tomorrow.

Literacy MAP - Please continue to study your letter-sounds. If you are in my group, you have another spelling test on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. There are 15 words to study.

Library Books - Students signed out new books today. Please continue to read daily to keep your brain active. Remember if you finish early, you can ask to visit the library before next Wednesday.

Have a great night.

Home Reading - Book exchange is tomorrow. Please remember to bring your books back. Also, remember to spend time reading tonight.

Math - Ask your child about patterns tonight. What are the two main types we have been studying? Have them show you both types on paper. Ask them what about the 'core' in a repeating pattern. Also, ask them what an attribute is.

Science - Thank you for your support in helping your child bring in rocks. There continues to be a few who have yet to do so. Please bring a small collection to class.

Have a great night. Stay warm!

Please keep them at home until I ask for them.

Homework Everyday!

Dear Students & Parents,

*Note to Parents: It has come to my attention that several students have tried to convince their parents that Grade 3 students do not have homework. This is not true as work is assigned on a daily basis.

Your child has homework assigned to him/her every day in Literacy M.A.P and Home Reading. Any extra items are posted here. Please continue to visit this site each day to check for your child's homework.

Should you have questions regarding homework, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail.

Writing  Journal - Today, each student was assigned homework in their Writing Journals. Please ask them to share with you, their work related to: "I Am...." Please help your child continue building the list of 'unique' attributes he/she possesses for homework tonight, This will enable us to continue our work with "What is My Story?"

Literacy M.A.P.  - Please ensure your child completes the homework assigned in Literacy M.A.P. Currently, they are learning or reviewing letter-sound relationships.

Homework Folders - **All plastic homework folders, blue notebooks and any additional work sent home from school must be returned the next day. Please help your child to pack his/her bag to bring all work back to school.

Fundraising - If your child has already sold 2 Entertainment Books, they will receive their toy monkey tomorrow as they did not arrive to school today.

Terry Fox Run - The run continues to be scheduled for Friday, September 17, 2010.
